Your Hurricane Season Prep Checklist

A season-by-season guide for homeowners in Fort Myers, Cape Coral & Punta Gorda.

Hurricane season in Southwest Florida runs June 1 through November 30. Whether you live here year-round or split your time elsewhere, having a plan before a storm is named beats scrambling once one is. Here’s the checklist we use with our own clients.

Before Hurricane Season Starts

Trim trees & secure loose exterior itemsDead branches and unsecured patio furniture become projectiles in high wind.
Test generators & check shuttersConfirm everything works before you actually need it, not during a watch.
Review your insurance policyConfirm your homeowner’s and flood coverage are current before storms are in the forecast.
Confirm your storm plan with your home watch companyKnow who’s checking on your property before, during, and after a storm.

When a Storm Watch or Warning Is Issued

Secure or bring in outdoor furniture and decorAnything that can move in the wind should be inside or tied down.
Install shutters or impact protectionDon’t wait until the last 24 hours, when supplies and help are hardest to find.
Unplug non-essential electronicsProtects against power surges during outages and restoration.
Move valuables away from ground-level flood riskStorm surge and rainfall flooding can affect areas that normally stay dry.

After the Storm

Full interior & exterior visual inspectionRoof, windows, and grounds checked for storm damage as soon as it’s safe.
Photo documentation for insuranceDetailed photos support any claim and speed up the process.
Check for water intrusionEspecially around the roofline, windows, and any storm shutters.
Confirm power & A/C are runningA prolonged outage after the storm passes is exactly when humidity damage starts.
